An invaluable resource for improvement
HQIP manages the UK’s largest suite of national clinical audits and outcome reviews, and hosts the largest orthopaedic registry in the world, on behalf of NHS England, the Welsh Government and others. These programmes provide publicly available, robust data on a wide range of conditions, from asthma to vascular health, and drive evidence-informed improvement in care.
We collect more data on quality of care than any other country. Let’s use it, let’s get it out there.” Dr Penny Dash, NHS England Chair
National Clinical Audit and Patient Outcomes Programme (NCAPOP)
We commission the National Clinical Audit and Patient Outcomes Programme (NCAPOP) on behalf of NHS England, the Welsh Government and others. This comprises of both clinical outcome reviews (which, as the name suggests, review patient outcomes) and national clinical audits, which are described by NHS England as a “way to determine if healthcare is being provided in line with standards…that helps care providers, commissioners and patients understand where services are doing well and where improvements are needed in line with evidence-based standards”.
National Joint Registry
We also host the National Joint Registry (NJR), which plays a crucial role in monitoring the performance of joint replacement surgeries and implants, driving advancements in orthopaedic care and improving patient outcomes.
Data from HQIP programmes
These programmes, which are delivered by a range of partners such as royal colleges and universities, are commissioned and managed by HQIP. They result in clinically-validated, publicly available data on a wide range of conditions, from asthma to vascular health, that is trusted by patients and clinicians alike. This evidence comes in the form of HQIP-published reports – with data, recommendations and infographics – while further data and resources are often available directly from our programmes.
From data to improvement
Evidence from our programmes is an essential tool for delivering improvements in patient care and outcomes. By sharing HQIP-commissioned data with healthcare providers and the wider community, and operating an outlier management process, we support those working in healthcare to improve care, make services safer, and deliver the best possible treatment to every patient.
